William Phelps“One of America's finest true-crime writers.” —Vincent Bugliosi, New York Times bestselling author of Helter Skelter“Phelps is the Harlan Coben of real-life thrillers.” —Allison Brennan, New York Times bestselling author of Tell No LiesWith sixteen pages of shocking photosBook Deadly Secrets (Pinnacle True Crime) Review :
This book was published with what seemed to be no editing beforehand. Spelling and grammar mistakes abound in it, but worse than that were all of the mistakes of the facts, for example a picture of Fred Andros before he shot himself in the face, disfiguring himself, was listed as being taken in 2000, when the book clearly states that he shot himself in 1999. Another example is that after stating that 38% of violence against women is perpetrated by husbands or boyfriends, the author states that "9 out of 10 times" it is the husband who is the murderer. What? There are plenty more such mistakes. I don't have time to list them all. The book is also repetitive, attempts to be coy about not giving the murderer's name, which becomes so very tedious. Just dreadfully researched and dreadfully written. Went in the recycling bin as soon as I finished it. The book reads like an overly long magazine article. The story is fascinating, telling the tale of a man, who for no apparent reason, has a mesmerizing influence over two women and can convince them to do things and act in a way that is totally foreign to their nature. He involves them in his criminal financial dealings, illicit sex and aberrant behavior all of which lead to murder. Normally this is fodder for an amazing book were it properly told. A narrator, the author, is reporting about things that happened in the past and takes the fun out of the book by bombarding the reader with "spoilers" throughout. As a result there is no suspense or mystery. We know all the answers to all the investigatory issues because the reporter tells us how things are going to work out and gives us advance warning of things that haven't yet happened or been discovered. The trial is similarly treated. I believe that the author could have done a much better job of crafting the story into a more interesting and exciting read, worthy of the bizarre facts of this case.
